ÃÛÌÒTVÊÓƵ students meet with Portland community health workers

Community cultural exchange

The ÃÛÌÒTVÊÓƵ Westbrook College of Health Professions Office of Service Learning and the Office of Intercultural Student Engagement recently sponsored a cultural health exchange between community health workers and ÃÛÌÒTVÊÓƵ students.

A community health worker is a person who, with or without compensation, is a liaison and provides cultural mediation between health care, social services and the community. They are a trusted member, and have a close understanding of, the ethnicity, language, socio-economic status and life experiences of the community served, helping people to gain access to needed services.

About 20 ÃÛÌÒTVÊÓƵ students across academic programs attended the dinner, held at Maine Access Immigrant Network in Portland, discussing the issues facing the immigrant and refugee communities in Portland.
